Frequently Asked Questions
- What is the difference between a Registered Psychologist, Clinical Psychologist and Psychiatrist?
- The terminology can be confusing, but there are some important differences between each of the roles above. Firstly, a Psychiatrist is a Medical Doctor that specialises in Mental Health and understanding the chemical and medical needs for clients with Psychological conditions. A Clinical Psychologist (or any other titled Psychologist) has completed 6 years of University, including a Masters Degree in their specialty, in addition to a 2 year ‘registrar’ program to attain the clinical title, totaling 8 years of training. A titled Psychologist will have had further specialist training and knowledge in their chosen field. A Registered Psychologist will have completed a minimum of 4 years of University study, followed by an additional 2 years of either supervised employment, study or a mix of both, totaling 6 years of training. Psychologists will engage clients in therapy to help them understand their thoughts, emotions and behaviours, their history and how this impacts on their presenting concerns. They may also completed assessments, where they have had the training or experience to do so.
- What do I do if my Psychologist doesn’t seem to be the right fit for me?
- It can feel awkward and frustrating when you just aren’t feeling that your Psychologist is the right fit for you. If this is the case, your Psychologist would most likely be open to having this conversation, seeing if they can do more to address any concerns but ultimately supporting you to find the right Psychologist for your needs.
